Washington Freedom are headed to another Major League Cricket final.
In a breathtaking contest at the Oakland Coliseum, Freedom overcame San Francisco Unicorns by seven runs to secure our place in a third straight championship match. It was another performance that showcased this team's fearless batting, resilience under pressure and ability to deliver when the stakes are at their highest.
Asked to bat first, Freedom came out with intent from the very first ball. Mitch Owen and Steven Smith tore into the new ball, racing to an 83-run opening stand inside the Powerplay. Owen blasted 42 from just 19 deliveries, while Smith struck 43 from 20 before both departed in quick succession.
That allowed Andries Gous to take center stage yet again.
Fresh off his historic 132 in the Challenger, Gous once again rose to the occasion with a superb 73 from only 40 deliveries. Timing the innings to perfection, he kept the scoreboard moving with aggressive strokeplay and stitched together vital partnerships with Rachin Ravindra and Nikhil Chaudhary. Freedom never allowed the momentum to dip, finishing with a commanding 238/6.
San Francisco Unicorns refused to go quietly. Matthew Short produced a remarkable unbeaten 121 to keep the chase alive, while Xavier Bartlett's late hitting ensured the contest went right down to the wire. Ben Dwarshuis provided crucial breakthroughs, and Saurabh Netravalkar's composed penultimate over left the Unicorns needing 22 from the final six balls.
The pressure only intensified when the last over began with a six and a four. Mitchell Owen, however, responded like champions do. Showing incredible composure, he nailed a series of yorkers to concede just four runs from the final four deliveries, sealing a memorable seven-run victory and sparking jubilant celebrations.
Freedom now stand just one win away from the Major League Cricket title. After another remarkable playoff performance, we head into a third consecutive MLC final with momentum, belief and the opportunity to make more history.
