Washington Freedom's pursuit of the Major League Cricket title ended in the cruelest fashion as Los Angeles Knight Riders held on for a dramatic one-run victory in front of a packed Oakland Coliseum.

Having elected to bowl, Freedom fought back superbly after an aggressive start from the Knight Riders. Andre Fletcher's rapid 47 helped the opposition race through the Powerplay, but the game swung when Nikhil Chaudhary struck twice in one over, removing Fletcher and Andre Russell to halt the momentum.

Rachin Ravindra continued the turnaround by dismissing Colin Munro and Sunil Narine in quick succession, while Ben Dwarshuis led the attack brilliantly with figures of 3/31. Supported by Chaudhary, Ravindra and Mitch Owen, Freedom restricted Knight Riders to 164, a target that looked within reach on a surface that had produced plenty of runs throughout the playoffs.

The chase, however, never quite found the rhythm it needed.

Sunil Narine's incisive opening spell put Freedom under immediate pressure, while Jason Holder chipped away through the middle overs. Andries Gous counterattacked with a fluent 40 and Obus Pienaar produced a composed half-century to keep the chase alive, refusing to let the contest slip away.

With 14 runs needed from the final over, the championship remained within touching distance. Pienaar launched the opening ball for six to ignite hopes inside the Oakland Coliseum, but the momentum shifted again as he was yorked off the very next delivery. Ian Holland fell soon after, and despite Lockie Ferguson finding the boundary, Freedom were left needing four from the final two balls. Singles from each delivery left the scores agonisingly short, with Lahiru Milantha run out attempting a second run off the final ball.

The result ends a memorable campaign that saw Washington Freedom reach a third consecutive Major League Cricket final. Throughout the season, this group displayed resilience, character and togetherness, producing unforgettable performances and refusing to stop believing.

While the trophy slipped away by the finest of margins, the journey of this team has once again set the standard. Freedom will leave 2026 with heads held high, knowing this group fought until the very last ball.
