Washington Freedom head into a crucial clash against LA Knight Riders as Major League Cricket arrives at the iconic Fairplex in Pomona for the very first time. The venue marks a significant milestone for the sport in the United States, with Fairplex also set to host cricket during the upcoming Olympic Games.
For Freedom, it is another important opportunity to build momentum as the tournament enters a decisive phase.
After five games, Freedom sit sixth on the table with two wins and three defeats, searching for consistency in a campaign that has shown flashes of brilliance. Their opponents, LA Knight Riders, occupy fourth place, having started strongly with back-to-back wins before slipping in their last two outings.
There have been plenty of positives for Freedom despite the mixed results. Mitch Owen has been one of the standout batters of the tournament and remains the leading run-scorer in MLC so far, continuing to set the tone at the top of the order with his aggressive strokeplay.
Andries Gous returned to form in the previous outing with a composed half-century, while Nikhil Chaudhary has made an immediate impact since joining the squad, contributing with both bat and ball in his first two appearances and quickly establishing himself as a valuable all-round option.
The fixture also carries added significance as it will be Mark Chapman’s final game for Freedom this season before he departs the squad. Chapman has been named in New Zealand’s squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series in the Caribbean, which begins on July 12. The experienced left-hander has added quality and stability to Freedom’s middle order, and the team will be hoping to send him off with a win in Pomona.
With both sides looking to bounce back, and history set to be made at a brand-new venue, all signs point to an exciting contest in Pomona.
