Washington Freedom Super Y-League Kicks Off 2009 Season
The Washington Freedom Super Y-League teams are coming off of a successful year, in which the club and several of its players were recognized for their accomplishments, and are looking to carry that momentum when the 2009 season begins this week. The U20 squad takes on the South Jersey Barons at the Maryland SoccerPlex on June 10th, with kick-off at 2 pm. The U13, U14, U15, and U16 teams travel to New Windsor, NY to take on the Hudson Valley Quickstrike for their first game of the season on June 13th.

Two players from the Washington Freedom W-League team were named to the W-League Team of the Week. Goalkeeper Alyssa Pont and midfielder Sandra Matute were both recognized for their outstanding play against the Boston Renegades.

Freedom wins W-League opener
The Washington Freedom opened the 2009 W-League season in dramatic style Saturday with a 1-0 win on the road against the Boston Renegades on a penalty kick by Sandra Matute in the 58th minute. Freedom goalkeeper Alyssa Pont saved seven shots en route to posting the shutout.

Nine players added to Freedom's W-League team
The Washington Freedom announced today that nine players will join the Washington Freedom’s W-League team for the 2009 season. "We are excited to have these elite college players join our club," Freedom Head Coach Jim Gabarra said. "We believe that they will have a good experience here with the Freedom. Our goal is to return them to their respective colleges as better players and help them develop into professionals after they are finished with college."

Twelve players with national program ties added to Freedom's W-League roster
The Washington Freedom announced that 12 players with national program ties will join the club’s W-League team for the 2009 season. “We could not be happier with the quality that these players bring to the club,” Freedom Head Coach Jim Gabarra said. “Having them as the core of the team with their national program experience is a great start in building our 2009 W-League team.”

Familiar Faces Fill Freedom Roster
After a successful 2009 WPS Draft, the Freedom has filled all the roster slots—some with familiar faces. Three former University of Virginia players—Becky Sauerbrunn, Sarah Huffman and Alex Singer—not only have experience playing together for the Cavaliers, but also for the Freedom.

Freedom Youth Players Named to Super Y ODP Select Team
The Washington Freedom Club had 11 girls in the ’92-’95 age bracket selected to attend The United Soccer Leagues Super Y-League ODP National Camp, which wrapped up on Sunday, February 22, 2009. Of those 11 Washington Freedom players, four were chosen for the Select Team rosters.

National Team Duty Means Travel, Travail for Roberts
Since earning All-Met honors last season as a junior midfielder at Urbana, Roberts has left the high school team she led to the 2007 Maryland 3A championship to undergo a whirlwind tour with the U.S. under-17 national team. Instead of afternoon practices close to home, she traveled to monthly, week-long training camps in three states, and qualifiers, exhibitions and tournaments on three continents.

McLean Freedom Players Named to The Washington Post's First Team
Remi Gibba named Player of the Year
The Washington Post announced their All-Met honors for girl's high school soccer last week. The players were selected by The Post's Soraya Nadia McDonald. McLean Freedom's Remi Gibba and Caroline Miller were honored with Player of the Year and First Team recognitions.
