TAMPA, FL – Following the completion of USL’s fourth annual Super-20 League Women’s Finals championed by two-time winner Triangle FC in Rockford, Illinois on Sunday, August 2 – USL has released the 2009 All-Tournament Team as voted by the coaches.
The 2008 recipient of the Super-20 League MVP award, Triangle FC’s Mollie Pathman is joined on the All-Tournament Team by her defensive counterpart Katie Dodd, who was named the 2009 MVP by Triangle Head Coach Pete Sadin. Completing the three-player triangle for Triangle FC is goalkeeper Kelsey Kearney, who made two saves in the penalty kick final last season to give Triangle FC their first Super-20 League title. This year, Kearney and the Triangle defense allowed just three goals in four matches against the best competition in the South Atlantic, New England, Mid Atlantic and Midwest regions of United States.
Finishing in second place, the Chicago Red 11 also had three players named to the All-Tournament Team. Defender Erin Kehoe, midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo and forward Rachael Sloan were named to the team after the side tied Triangle, 2-2, on the final day of competition. Head-to-head with the other WPS Academy team, the Washington Freedom, the Red 11 played to a 1-1 draw on Thursday, July 30.
“For one so young (17), Vanessa DiBernardo shows a lot of poise on the ball,” said Chicago Red 11 Head Coach Tony Anglin. “Her work ethic is incredible. She is one of the players I know can make it at the next level. I am surprised she is not already in the national team pool.”
The Freedom had two players named to the All-Tournament Team in forward Tiffany Brown and midfielder Brook Chang. Brown was nominated by every opposing coach she faced, scoring a goal in the Freedom’s 2-0 win over the Brooklyn Knights and notching an assist in Washington’s 5-1 loss to Triangle FC.
The Brooklyn Knights’ had defender Hanna St. Marie and forward Donna-Kay Henry named to the team. Henry, who also plays in the W-League with the New York Magic, netted two goals in the Knights 3-0 win over Black Watch SC.
Black Watch SC’s Rachael Silverman rounded out the list. She earned nominations in Black Watch’s 3-0 loss to the Brooklyn Knights and the team’s 4-0 loss to Triangle FC.
