W-League
The Washington Freedom W-League squad is on a roll, winning their last three games by a total score of 16-0 and improving their record to 5-1-0 on the season.
In the first match of the weekend, the Washington Freedom defeated the New York Magic by a score of 9-0. After scoring just five minutes into the match when Meghan Lenczyck put away a bouncing ball in front of the goal off a corner kick, Brittany Tegeler added to the goal in the 28’ minute by tapping in a cross from Katie Watson. Just four minutes later, left back Mara Osher took a long ball from Toni Pressleyjust inside the NY half of the field and ran straight to goal putting away her shot. The Freedom went into the locker room with a 3-0 lead at half. The Freedom came out relentless in the second half, adding 6 goals to the scoreboard. Tegeler added to her tally in the 49’ after a through ball came from Becky Edwards, beating the NY goalkeeper 1v1. Jenn Parsons got herself on the scoreboard after Osher served in a second cross following a corner kick in the 56’. Jessie Wolfe scored her first goal of the season in the 66’ at the back post on a corner kick. The Freedom kept up the pressure when Parsons added a goal off a flick pass from her former VCU teammate Sandra Matute in the 70’. Just two minutes later, 17 year old Molly Menchel scored in her first outing with the W-League team in 2009. Parsons completed her hat trick just ten minutes later after combining again with Matutue. Several Freedom players had notable performances on the night, including Jenn Parsons (3 goals, 1 assist), Brittany Tegeler (2 goals), Sandra Matute (4 assists), and Megan Lenczyck (1 goal, 1 assist). Mara Osher, Jesse Wolfe, and Molly Menchel all scored their first goals of the 2009 season.
In Sunday’s match-up, the New Jersey Wildcat defense held strong for 33 minutes before Freedom forward Brittany Tegeler was able to find the back of the net off of a cross driven into the box by Katie Watson. Matute struck just before half time with Parsons, reversing roles from the night before, giving the Freedom a 2-0 lead going into the locker room. The second half saw NJ come out putting more pressure on the Freedom and having several chances of their own. In the 84th minute, Jenn Parsons collected a ball on the counter-attack, slotting the ball across to an open Caitlin Miskel who scored what would be the final goal of the contest. Jenn Parsons had two assists on the night.
Cancelled due to weather, the Washington Freedom vs. Hudson Valley Quickstrike game has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. on July 16 at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Next up, the Freedom takes on the Western Mass Lady Pioneers and Connecticut Passion on the road on June 27 and 28, respectively.
Youth Team Wrap-Up
The Washington Freedom Youth teams also put together a successful weekend at home.
Both U20 games were rescheduled due to the inclement weather.
The U16 squad fell to Perugia Grifos 3-1 in a hard fought battle. The results leaves the team at 0-1-1. Their next match is June 27 against the Long Island Rough Riders.
The U15 Freedom defeated the Perugia Grifos by a score of 9-0. The win brings their record to 1-1-0. They look to carry momentum into their match at NY Magic on July 5.
The U14 squad played two matches this weekend, defeating the NJ Stallions by a score of 3-0 on Saturday, and the Perugia Grifos 4-0. This brings their record to 3-0-0. Next, they travel to New Jersey to take on Parsippany SC on June 24.
Lastly, the U13 Freedom also added two notches to the win column this weekend. They defeated the NJ Stallions 2-0 and the Perugia Grifos 8-2, and remain undefeated on the season with a 3-0-0 record. The U13 Freedom faces the NY magic on June 24.
