The Washington Freedom Super Y-League teams are coming off of a successful year, in which the club and several of its players were recognized for their accomplishments, and are looking to carry that momentum when the 2009 season begins this week. The U20 squad takes on the South Jersey Barons at the Maryland SoccerPlex on June 10th, with kick-off at 2 pm. The U13, U14, U15, and U16 teams travel to New Windsor, NY to take on the Hudson Valley Quickstrike for their first game of the season on June 13th.
In December of 2008, the United Soccer League (USL) recognized the Washington Freedom as the #1 Girls Club in Final Super-Y Rankings following the regular season. These rankings are based primarily on winning percentage, which accounts for 70% of the vote, while standards and operations make up the remaining 30%.
The Freedom’s U20 team completed the 2008 regular season unbeaten (9-0-1) for the second year running. The U16 Freedom was the first of the SYL teams to secure their position at the 2008 North American Finals and finished with a record of 7-1-2.
The U14 Freedom finished 13-1-0 with a league leading 59 goals scored and garnered first place in Group C. Both new additions to the Freedom club, the U15’s compiled a record of 5-4-2 and the U13’s finished with a record of 11-1-1.
The Freedom also had several individuals recognized by the United Soccer League. Eleven girls in the ’92-’95 age group were selected to attend the Super Y-League ODP National Camp. These players, who were among the top two percent of players in the league, had the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of the nation’s top collegiate coaches, as well as the U.S. National Staff.
Out of the eleven Freedom players in attendance, four were chosen for the 2009 Super Y-League Select Team rosters, including Alexandra Clarke (forward, ’94/’95 age group), Caroline Gray (midfielder, ’93 age group), Darby Wiegand (midfielder, ’93 age group), and Josephine Seebeck (midfielder, ’93 age group).
Washington Freedom’s Tiffany Brown was named to the USL Super-20 All-League Team. The Freedom also had three players named to the Super Y All-League teams for their respective age groups. Marlo Sweatman was named to the U13 All-League Team, Katie Yensen to the U14 All-League Team, and Molly Menchel to the U16 All-League Team.
