Kris Ward began working as a staff coach/youth coach with the Freedom in 2004. Having worked mainly with the Center of Excellence teams and as part of the Freedom Camp Staff, this year Ward was involved at the W league and U20 level as an asst coach.
Ward began his coaching career 10 years ago as an asst coach at Centreville HS and youth coach in Northern VA. Since then he has coached both boys and girls teams at all levels and ages. He won his first state cup as the head coach of the MATT ’91 Boys team in 2003. Most recently he served as an asst coach to Freedom Assistant Coach Clyde Watson with the Mclean Freedom and currently works with various teams in the Mclean Club. In 2001 he began coaching for Maryland ODP with Dave Tenney, a former Freedom coach and Director of Youth Development for the Club. Ward served as an ODP State asst coach for 4 years and as a State Head Coach for 4 years and also as a part of Region 1 staff for 2 years. As a Head Coach in ODP, Ward helped identify and train more than 50 Regional and 10 National team players. From 2004 – 2007 Ward was an asst coach for the Men’s Program at St Mary’s College of Maryland. Working under Head Coach Herb Gainey, his primary responsibilities included planning, implementing and documenting training sessions, match day and video analysis. Ward has traveled with teams to Brazil, England, Holland, Belgium and Denmark and has studied with coaches from each as well as some time with coaches from the Czech Republic and France.
Born in San Diego, CA, he resides in Tyson’s Corner, VA.
