McLean Freedom Players Named to The Washington Post's First Team
Remi Gibba named Player of the Year
The Washington Post announced their All-Met honors for girl's high school soccer last week. The players were selected by The Post's Soraya Nadia McDonald. McLean Freedom's Remi Gibba and Caroline Miller were honored with Player of the Year and First Team recognitions.
National Team Duty Means Travel, Travail for Roberts
Since earning All-Met honors last season as a junior midfielder at Urbana, Roberts has left the high school team she led to the 2007 Maryland 3A championship to undergo a whirlwind tour with the U.S. under-17 national team. Instead of afternoon practices close to home, she traveled to monthly, week-long training camps in three states, and qualifiers, exhibitions and tournaments on three continents.
Freedom announces open tryout dates
BOYDS, Md. (Dec. 16, 2008) – The Washington Freedom will hold an open tryout at the synthetic fields at the Maryland SoccerPlex on February 21-22, 2009. From this tryout players may be selected to attend an invitation only tryout with the Freedom running February 26-28. Players at the invitation only tryout will have the opportunity to earn an invitation to the Preseason Camp.

The Washington Freedom had three youth players named to their respective Super Y All-League Teams. Selections were based off the nominations of opposing coaches throughout the Super Y Finals.
More Than Just a Pro Team
While much of the Washington Freedom’s focus has been on building a professional team to be part of Women’s Professional Soccer’s inaugural season, it can be easy to overlook the fact that the Freedom is more than just a professional soccer team. With youth teams, affiliations with local clubs and a top-level amateur squad, the Freedom hopes that building a club system similar to the ones in Europe will be the key to supporting professional women’s soccer in the U.S.
Freedom Named #1 Girls Club in Final Super Y Rankings
United Soccer Leagues (USL) announced today the final Super Y-League First and Second 11 Club rankings for the 2008 season,
recognizing the league’s top clubs on a competitive and administrative basis following the regular season and the 10th Annual Super Y-League North American Finals. All but five of the 37 clubs in the rankings were competing for the 10 championships that were up-for-grabs November 20-25.

Lauderdale, FL). Among those invited were 2008 Washington Freedom players Ali Andrzejewski, Jillian Gilbeau, Anabel Jimenez, Christen Karniski, Rebecca Moros, Alex Singer, and KJ Spisak.

Washington Freedom Finish Third in W-League
The Washington Freedom finished their 2008 season with an impressive 17-2-2 overall record. They won the Northeast Division title and the Eastern Conference title, and fought their way to a third place finish in the W-League Championship. Lori Lindsey, Christie Welsh, and Emily Janss all received W-League honors for their performances throughout the season and in the Final Four.

ATLANTA, GA -- The Atlanta Silverbacks’ 2008 W-League season ended much like the 2007 campaign did, at the hands of the Washington Freedom. The Freedom dominated in possession throughout the Eastern Conference Championship game, but only squeaked by the Silverbacks 2-1 in overtime thanks to a 118th minute goal from Ali Andrzejewski.

Freedom’s Jenn Parsons Named Virginia High School Coach of the Year
Jenn Parsons, a forward for the Washington Freedom, was named Virginia’s High School Coach of the Year after leading the George Mason varsity high school soccer team to a 19-3-2 record and coaching them to a regular season title, the district tournament title, the regional tournament title, and eventually to a state tournament championship.

Even 3 hours of weather delays couldn’t stop the Washington Freedom from taking care of business against the Fredericksburg Lady Gunners Sunday night and earning 3 points in one of their final home games of the season. Christie Welsh and Jill Gilbeau scored two goals apiece, and Kele Golebiowski and Sarah Huffman each added a goal to defeat the Lady Gunners 6-1.

Three different players hit the back of the net as the Washington Freedom dimmed Jersey Sky Blue’s playoff chances with a 3-0 victory at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Christie Welsh and Jenn Parsons struck in the first half and Ali Andrzejewski connected just after halftime for the Freedom, which moved to the top of the Northeast Division with the victory.

W-League and USL Super-20 League Finals headed to Virginia Beach
United Soccer Leagues announced today that the hosting rights for the 14th Annual W-League Championship tournament and the Third Annual Super-20 League North American Finals have been awarded to the longtime USL club Hampton Roads Piranhas. The W-League Semifinals and Final are set for Thursday, July 31 and Saturday, August 2, respectively. The 28-team Super-20 League North American Finals (men’s and women’s) will officially begin Thursday, July 31 and run through Sunday, August 3.

The Washington Freedom regained their scoring touch Sunday against the New Jersey Wildcats and ran away with a convincing 5-1 victory. Four different Freedom players scored, with Lori Lindsey netting two, at the Maryland SoccerPlex Stadium field in front of 1012 fans who braved a hot and humid evening.

The Boston Renegades came to the Maryland SoccerPlex and shutout the Defending Champion Freedom on a 54th minute goal from Mary Therese McDonnell. The first half produced numerous scoring chances for both teams, as both the Freedom and the Renegades were able to create quality shots.
Freedom Comes Away With 3-0 Victory Over Lady Gunners
In their second league game of the season, the Washington Freedom defeated the Fredericksburg Lady Gunners thanks to a hat trick by forward Jenn Parsons. Although the Freedom only led by one goal at halftime, they had taken 16 shots and forced the Lady Gunners’ goalkeeper to make 11 saves.
Freedom Wrap Up Trip to Colorado with 3-0 Victory
 A day after their victory against the Fort Collins Force, the Washington Freedom took to the field once again in a match against Real Colorado. In spite of a bumpy start, the Freedom grabbed an early lead when Ali Andrzejewski scored off an assist by Jen Parsons in the 10th minute of play. Both teams struggled to create dangerous scoring opportunities for much of the first half until Christie Welsh added a second goal in the 37th minute when the Real Colorado keeper came out of her goal to clear a ball for Welsh to find it on her foot with an easy open goal finish.
Freedom Victorious in Colorado
 Bigger, stronger, faster - that was the theme of Thursday’s 2-0 exhibition victory by the Washington Freedom over the Fort Collins Force at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The two teams belong to the W-League, but many of the similarities end there. The defending champion Freedom had the edge in size, strength and speed. That was apparent to the eye, and it was apparent on the field. Emily Janss, who is listed as a midfielder but played significant stretches at right back, toe-poked the ball past Force keeper Kara Linder in the 23rd minute.
Freedom Beat Long Island in Season Opener
 The Washington Freedom started their defense of the W-League title with a win over the Long Island Rough Riders in their season opener 3-1. After the long trip up to Michael Tully Field in Long Island the Freedom started off strong, controlling much of the play and possession. Long Island native Christie Welsh opened the scoring in the on the 6:00 minute mark after some great combination play and a quick switch of the point of attack when Emily Janss played the ball into Welsh, who turned her defender the wrong way to finish from 12 yards out. The Freedom continued to press through the first half but finished the half leading 1-0.
Huffman, Lohman & Welsh Called into US National Team Camp
Freedom players Sarah Huffman, Joanna Lohman and Christie Welsh were called into 17-day National Team Camp by new US Coach Pia Sundhage. The 17-day camp at the Home Depot Center in Carson California is part of preparations for the CONCACAF Olympic Women’s Qualifying Tournament that will be held this April in Mexico.
Women's Professional Soccer Launches
 BALTIMORE, MD -- Formally announced in September, the new women’s professional soccer league launching in Spring 2009 in which three W-League teams will have shared ownership with pro teams now has a name, Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS). With the unveiling of the league logo and launch of its website, WPS made its official debut at the NSCAA annual convention. The ownership groups of the Washington Freedom, Jersey Sky Blue and FC Indiana W-League teams are also among the ownership groups of the new pro league. The Freedom, who officially joined the W-League last season and captured the league title in their first year, will be the first women’s pro team with a vertically-integrated club pyramid. The Freedom, who will continue to field a W-League team, are also members of the USL Super-20 League, where they won the inaugural championship in 2006, and the Super Y-League. Jersey Sky Blue, an expansion club last season, will own the new NJ/NY pro team in addition to their W-League side and FC Indiana will be part of the ownership group of the new pro Chicago franchise.
