The Washington Freedom scored 2 goals in each half in a dominating road performance at Robbinsville HS in Trenton, NJ on Saturday. The Freedom again consistently possessed the ball and kept the Wildcats in their own half hoping for a rare counter attack. It took the Freedom until the 32nd minute to start the scoring. Christie Welsh got on the end of a Kele Golebiowski through ball and was able to beat Roryn Jones to put the Freedom ahead. Golebiowski again caused the Wildcat defense problems on a nice dribbling run into the penalty area, where a defender tripped Golebiowski while reaching for the ball, giving the Freedom a penalty. Lori Lindsey stepped up and put the ball into the upper left corner as Jones was fooled and went the other direction.
The Freedom came out in the second half and quickly put the game out of reach with Ella Masar scoring in the 47th and 53rd minute. Christie Welsh turned provider with a nice through ball that Masar reached just before Jones closed the shot down. Her shot rebounded off and over the Wildcat goalkeeper and rolled into the goal to make it 3-0. Masar’s hard work and pressure was rewarded with another goal in the 53rd minute. The Freedom bench was given considerable minutes and maintained the defensive pressure and ball possession. Ali Andrzejewski and Heather Tomko each had good chances to increase the lead but Jones was up to the challenge with 6 second half saves.
“This was an important 3 points for us as the playoff chance gets tight. We have some very big games coming up and needed to get some goals. Overall we played very well and took advantage of a depleted Wildcat team” – Head Coach Jim Gabarra
